I watched with disbelief the unfolding debacle sweeping across the eastern coast of Japan. An earthquake struck in the early hours of this morning and triggered a massive tsunami, sweeping houses, cars and everything in its path. I witnessed a bus trying to flee the wall of water and mud, caught up and swept away. It is tragic and I feel sad for the citizens of Japan in those areas.
Images like these tend to create a feeling of uncertainty, even in people who are watching from millions of miles away. It reminds us of our vulnerability and exposure to harm and evil. Soon, thoughts of things that can go wrong around you begin to well up in your mind and you feel the hold of fear. Over here, while we are not prone to such disasters, we are faced with different kind of evils in the society. Robbers, car accidents, bike accidents, murder, rape, job loss, and so on. There is a general feeling of insecurity that has made millions escape the shores of this land, only to find out that this feeling pervades everywhere.
In times, like these, what hope does the child of God have? Are we helpless and hopeless like everyone? No. We have an insurance that is not of this world, a security that can never fail, we have God on our side. A man saw images like these years ago and declared,
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! – Ps 46: 1-3 (NLT)
Our hope is in the Almighty God who made the heavens and the earth. His power is able to keep His children from harm. I do not know how He will do it but I know He can do it and He does not lie. The thought might want to argue that this is a massive disaster and one person or few people can’t be isolated from the destruction. You should also know this,
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty….Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you….If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter – Psalm 91
We see here that God can isolate those who trust in Him from harm. He is able to deliver and to save, more than able. The question is, “how much do you trust Him?” God promises and He does not lie. He also says of Himself,
Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?
All that is required from us is faith. Faith in His Almighty power. This goes beyond natural disasters to all kinds of bad occurrences. God is able to preserve His own from harm. Do you trust Him to? Do you trust Him as YOUR SECURITY? You have to have faith in Him. Remind yourself daily of His power and might. Declare His word and promises over your life. When you are confronted with situations that seem beyond your control, speak to them. Declare His word over such situations. Speak to your mountains and they will come down
23For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. (Mark 11:23, King James Version)Let us remember to pray for those affected by the disaster, especially God’s own, in Japan, that swift help will come to them.
Peace to the citizens of Japan and to everyone, in Jesus’ name!
