How to build a successful career in 2023

Many people leave their career development to chance, hoping that hard work alone will get them where they want to go. But unfortunately, building a successful career takes more than hoping for the best. If you want to achieve long-term career success, you need to be intentional and create a professional development plan that will guide you to your goals. A good plan includes identifying both long-term and short-term goals, as well as the skills and knowledge required to achieve them. This structured approach has been essential in my career journey, helping me shift paths and climb new heights.

Identifying Goals and Choosing a New Path

When I started my career, I had a clear plan. I studied industrial chemistry at university and later earned a master’s degree in analytical chemistry. After graduation, I began my job search in this field, eventually landing a role as a chemist at a pharmaceutical company. However, after some time, I realized that this career path wouldn’t take me where I truly wanted to be. I decided to pursue Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) as a new focus because it aligned well with my science background and offered me a new avenue to apply my skills.

Making this change started with self-reflection. Once I identified my goal and passion, I knew I needed a solid plan to get there. I didn’t just wait for an HSE opportunity to come my way; I proactively created one by volunteering to take on HSE responsibilities at my current company. This role gave me valuable experience and proved to my managers that I was serious about my new career path.

Creating a Step-by-Step Action Plan

Once you identify your goals and passions, the next step is to create a specific action plan. A good plan includes clear, measurable steps that will guide you toward your goal. By setting a timeline for each step, you can track your progress and make adjustments as needed.

In my case, I started by adding HSE tasks to my existing role as a chemist. This allowed me to build my skills without waiting for a formal role change. Not long after, I landed a position as an HSE Officer. But I didn’t stop there—I continued investing in my growth by taking HSE courses, attending webinars, and participating in training programs. Even when I received an offer for a higher-paying role, I turned it down because it didn’t align with my plan. Staying focused on my long-term goal was more important to me than a quick financial gain.

Focusing on Passion, Not Just Paychecks

One of the biggest mistakes people make in their careers is moving from one opportunity to the next solely for a higher salary. Chasing paychecks alone often leads to burnout or dissatisfaction, as you may lose interest once the work becomes challenging or repetitive. Instead, focus on finding work that excites and motivates you—something you would do even if you weren’t being paid.

Finding work that aligns with your interests and strengths allows you to put in the time and effort needed to become great. When you’re passionate about your work, you can keep growing and improving, regardless of external rewards. That passion, more than anything else, is what sets top professionals apart.

Adapting Your Plan as You Grow

Career development isn’t a one-time event; it’s a continuous process. As your goals and aspirations evolve, your professional development plan should change to reflect them. Staying open to new opportunities is key to long-term growth. Sometimes, new doors open in ways you didn’t expect, so your plan should allow for flexibility.

For instance, as I moved deeper into my HSE career, I took on new projects, learned additional skills, and considered roles that could advance my goals. I’m not suggesting that you follow my exact path. Instead, I want to emphasize that you can’t leave your growth to chance. Be intentional and stay open to new learning opportunities, even if they take you out of your comfort zone.

Building a Support Network

No one succeeds alone. Surrounding yourself with people who can guide and support your career is essential. Seek out mentors, colleagues, and industry professionals who can offer valuable advice and open doors for networking. Personally, I gained so much from connecting with experienced HSE professionals on LinkedIn. Their guidance, tips, and resources have been instrumental in helping me grow in my field.

Start Now—Take Control of Your Career

There’s no one-size-fits-all formula for career success. For some, success takes years, while others achieve their goals more quickly. But no matter where you are on your path, don’t leave your career development to chance.

We’re just at the start of a new year, making this the perfect time to create a plan that will drive you toward your career goals. Take the time to reflect, set intentional goals, and map out your steps. Whether you’re in the early stages of your career or looking to make a change, the path to the top begins with the actions you take today.

Start now—don’t let another year pass without taking charge of your professional growth. The future belongs to those who prepare for it.
